You can see more of these photos from the Redwood vs. San Marin Track Meet 2012 HERE.

I suppose it’s no coincidence that the only sports I enjoy photographing are football and track. These are the sports I participated in as a teenager. That’s long ago now, but for fleeting seconds on the sidelines watching these young athletes, I can imagine it’s me, and enjoy the excitement of those days in this moment.

I’m hoping my photos serve another generation, but I wonder how many students and parents see them or buy one or two at VarsityPix.com. I have no way of knowing, since any profits from sales go directly to Redwood High School, but I suspect not many. At best, a quick look and then forgotten, there are so many distractions these days.

Fifty years from now, in retirement, I wonder if today’s students will look back at their days on the field, and try to remember their feelings, and wish they had those old photographs to help.

So many things that seem minor in the moment take on significance as time passes.

  2. All wonderful. They seem such great kids. The three (four) runners, one with a fluorescent green shoe, are sublime. But my favorite is the last one — the near miss with just legs and feet, about to disappear groundward.
